Newspaper Rock

00. While looking for things to visit in Utah, we stumbled upon something called Newspaper Rock Sate Monument. What is that? We had to find out.

01. Located along a relatively well-traveled road it is about 50 miles (or an hour’s drive) from Moab where we were staying?

02. Signs of Cattle crossing?

03. Yeap!

04. The drive was very scenic with lot of huge boulders to see.

05. We wondered if anyone attempts to climb these rocks?

06. Here is your answer. Can you spot a climber in this very steep rock?

07. We arrived at your destination.

08. Aha! Pertoglyphs! Now the name Newspaper Rock makes sense.

09. What do these things say? Who created them? And when?

10. The sign tells us that the first carvings were made 2000 years ago. In Navajo, the rock is called “a rock that tells a story”.

11. We see pictures of deer, buffalo, antelope, riders on horses. But what is the story? These could be doodlings, gang graffiti, games, advertisements. Until someone comes up with the definite answer, we just have to speculate.

12. After spending a bit of time at newspaper rock, we took pictures of the nearby non newspaper rocks.

13. And continued on our way to Canyonlands

14. It was a cold February day and there was some snow in the higher elevations.

15. And we did see some real wildlife, other than cows.

16. The End
